Mandatory Education and Age Requirements:

Education Requirements
  • In order to operate a motorized vessel, including a personal watercraft, anyone born after 1/1/1974 must complete a boating safety education course approved by the Vermont Department of Public Safety and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).
  • Boating cards are valid for a lifetime and do not need to be renewed. No one under 10 years of age may receive a certificate. Operators that are required to take a boating safety education course must be in possession of the card at all times when operating on the waters of Vermont.
  • The BoatU.S. Online Boating Safety Course does not meet this state’s boating education requirements.
  • Operator Restrictions: Vermont has the following age and horsepower (hp) restrictions, even if they have successfully completed a boating safety education course:
    • No one under the age of 12 may legally operate any vessel powered by a motor rated more than 6 hp.
    • No one under the age of 16 may legally operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
  • Visit www.dps.state.vt.us/vtsp/boat_safe.html for more information on approved courses
