How much does the course cost?
  • The BoatU.S. Foundation is a free NASBLA approved course. When you finish, you can print your certificate on your own printer, or ask us to mail a copy to you for a $5.00 fee. Some states will charge additional fees to issue you a permanent state ID verifying completion of a boating safety course. Be sure to read your state's Mandatory Eduation Requirements for more information.

I took an online course, but I don’t remember which provider I took it with.
  • The BoatU.S. Foundation Online Course is free. If you paid for the course you took it was offered by a different provider. If you’re sure you took the course with us, but still can’t log in or find your old certificate, give us a call at 1-800-245-2628, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

I just finished the course, now how do I print my certificate?
  • Once you have completed a course, your certificate will display on you’re My Account page, on the left, below the calendar. Click here to see an example. Your certificate never expires, and you can come back to reprint your certificate at any time.

How do I get my state specific boating card?
  • If your state requires you to have a state-issued boating card you may be required to send in a copy of your boating safety certificate along with a state application form and a small fee. Check your state’s Mandatory Education Requirements for further details.

How long is my certificate good for?
  • Your boating safety certificate will never expire. It is valid for life.

Does my certificate allow me to operate any boat?
  • Check your state requirements for specifics about requirements for PWC vs other boats. Some states require classroom courses for PWC operation but have no requirements for other boats. www.boatus.org

Am I required to take a course?
  • Go to www.boatus.org and click on your state from the map to get more information on your state’s specific requirements for boaters.

What if my state doesn’t approve online courses?
  • Though your state may not approve online courses we encourage you to use our material as a studying aid for a classroom course and proctored exam
  • When you are ready to take a classroom course, click here to find one near you

Will other states honor my certificate?
  • Reciprocity varies from state to state, check the state specific info of the state you wish to visit here: www.boatus.org

Is there a time limit on my course? How long do I have to complete it?
  • Though some states have requirements for the minimum time you are required to spend in the course, there is no maximum time limit. If you are in the middle of a lesson and need to leave, just click SAVE & CLOSE and the system will save your place and when you come back it will open to the page you were last viewing. Do not leave a lesson open and inactive for more than a few minutes. You will risk being automatically logged out and losing your progress so far.

Why am I learning about things that don’t pertain to my style of boating or the waters I boat on?
  • The National Association of State Boating Law Administrator (NASBLA), the organization that oversees boating courses and course content, requires a variety of topics to be covered in every boating safety course. This extra material helps to round out your experience and could be useful should you find yourself boating in a different area or on a different type of craft in the future.

Will this course run in all Internet browsers?
The course disappeared, all I see now is 'Courseware Running'
One of the question pages in the quiz/exam is blank
Error on registration page - birthdate required
I made a typo in my name when I registered, how can I fix that?
I passed all the quizzes, but they all still say 'In Progress'

Will this course run in all Internet browsers?
  • This course has been optimized to run in Internet Explorer and Firefox. The latest versions of each are recommended, but it will run in earlier versions of each browser. AOL's modified version of Internet Explorer has demonstrated some problems in recording when a lesson has been completed. So AOL's version of Internet Explorer should also be avoided.
  • For optimum performance you should use either Firefox 3.6.x or Internet Explorer 8 with pop-ups and JavaScript enabled.
  • This course is not compatible with any current smartphone browsers and should not be attempted on an iPad, iPhone or other mobile device.

The course disappeared, all I see now is 'Courseware Running' - what do I do?
  • If you see 'Courseware Running' on the screen, you've likely clicked out of the lesson inadvertenly. The lesson is still open, it's just behind the screen you see. Go to the taskbar at the bottom of your montir (the bar that has the clock in the right corner) and click on the window that says 'BoatUS Foundation - Online..." You should have two windows that begin with BoatUS and you want to click on the one that is farthest to the right. Click here to see a sample screenshot.

One of the question pages in the quiz/exam is blank - what do I do?
  • Close the lesson to save you place and try re-opening it. Often this will cause the content to load correctly. If it doesn't work, consider switching to Firefox which you can download here: www.Firefox.com

I'm trying to register for the course and I keep getting an error that my birthdate is required - what's wrong?
  • The registration page has a dropdown menu for the month and the year, but you have to enter to day using the keys on your keyboard.

I made a typo in my name when I registered, how can I fix that?
  • You can change some of your personal information by clicking on 'My Profile' from your My Accounts page. But, you cannot change your name, date of birth or hair/eye color. If you need to change any of these, contact us through our comments form.

I passed all the quizzes, but they still say 'In Progress'
  • This is related to the AOL's modified version of Internet Explorer (See Question 1 above). To record your scores from each lesson, open Internet Explorer (look for the blue 'e' icon, not AOL's 'A' icon) or Firefox, log back into the course and open each lesson up one at a time. Wait for the quiz results screen to load, then close the lesson using either the browser's close button in the top right corner or the lesson's Save & Close button in the bottom right corner. The system will record your score once the lesson is closed and it will display on your lesson list for the course.
