The BoatUS Foundation's Online Course is the only free Online Boating Safety Course approved by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

All Virginia boaters and PWC operators will soon be required to carry a boating safety education course completion card in order to operate a PWC or boat with a 10hp or greater motor. The requirement is being phased in over the next few years and by 2016, all boaters in the state of Virginia will be required to complete a boating safety course.

For more information on Virginia's boating regulations and the phase-in schedule, click State Requirements above. The BoatUS Foundation's Virginia Boating course consists of 6 lessons. Pages are timed such that you must spend a minimum of 6 hours studying the course material and completing the chapter quizzes. Each lesson has a 10-question quiz which you must pass with a score of at least 90% or you will be required to repeat the entire lesson. You must pass all 6 quizzes in order to print your certificate of completion.
