The BoatUS Foundation's Online Course is the only free Online Boating Safety Course approved by the New York State Parks & Recreation for boaters born before May 1, 1996.
The BoatU.S. Foundation's Free Online Boating Safety Course and other internet courses do NOT currently satisfy the New York state mandatory education requirement for boaters born on or after 5/1/1996 as well as all PWC operators are required to complete a NASBLA approved boating safety course
Boaters born on or after 5/1/1996 will not receive a certificate of completion upon passing this course. The certificate awarded to boaters born before that date will not entitle the holder to operate a PWC on the waters of the state of New York.
Any boater may take the BoatU.S. course as practice or a refresher, but you must take a classroom-based course and pass a proctored exam in order to satisfy the requirements New York if you were born on or after 5/1/1996 or wish to operate a PWC at any age.
Suffolk County Boaters
- If you were born before 5/1/1996 and DO NOT plan to operate a PWC (Jet-Ski, Sea-Doo, WaveRunner, etc) you CAN take this course to satisfy the requirements of Suffolk County. You must PASS all seven lessons in order to receive your certificate of completion. Students on or after 5/1/1996 will NOT be awarded a certificate of completion for passing this course.
